NON-EU CITIZENS holding a residence permit issued by a European Union country (Schengen Area):
Non-EU incoming exchange students holding a Schengen permit of stay for study purposes issued by a European Union country (Schengen Area), that allows for the exemption from the entry visa and covers the entire mobility period (less than 360 days), have to check if their VISA is valid also in Italy.
If Schengen permit of stay does not cover the entire period of mobility in Italy, you must instead apply for permit of stay in Italy.
This procedure does not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.
How to apply for a visa for study purpose – for NON-EU students
Students have to complete a 2-step application: Visa, Permit of stay
In order to get a VISA for study purposes, students need to apply to the Universitaly portal: this tool has been designed for international students willing to study in Italy both for an entire study cycle or for a semester/year abroad. Check if you need a student visa on the “Visa for Italy” portal (more details on the procedure to follow in order to get a student visa are available at the “Visa for Italy – Apply for a student visa” section).
Pre-register and submit the application on the Universitaly portal (mandatory) at https://www.universitaly.it.
Please, do not forget to select: “I WANT TO SPEND A PERIOD OF MOBILITY FOR STUDY/TRAINEESHIP”.
Once you have completed the procedure on the Universitaly portal, the International Office staff will check your applications which will be then forwarded by the system to the competent Embassies/Consulates. Each VISA application will be processed according to the relative methods and time frames of each Country diplomatic institution. Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent Embassy or Consulate.
Apply for the study visa: due to the global situation some Consulates’ procedures might have shifted and vary from Consulate to Consulate. Therefore, students should follow the instructions provided on the website of the Consulate where they are going to apply. We recommend that students get informed about visa procedures well in advance.
Once in Italy, all Non-EU students must obtain a ‘Permesso di Soggiorno’ (Residence Permit) within 8 working days after their arrival.
They must first go to the nearest Post Office and ask there for the ‘yellow kit’, an envelope which contains the application forms and instructions for completing them.
Then, students must go to the IRO (upon appointment) bringing the yellow kit, the passport, and the Italian Tax Code, to fill out all the forms.
Lastly, they have to go back to the Post Office, deliver the forms duly completed, and pay the due expenses (80 € approximately). For info, check https://www.poste.it/prodotti/guida-rilascio-e-rinnovo-permesso-di-sogg…).
